If you’ve got a kid (or more than one), you’ve probably got a lot of toys around the house. Even if you lean toward minimalism, it’s somewhat inevitable that your kiddos will amass a collection of their favorite toys, whether they’re open-ended Montessori toys or a well-curated collection of plastic dinosaurs. My 7-year-old’s toy collection is full of American Girl and Our Generation dolls and their accessories, and creating a proper storage solution for them was essential to keep these 18” dolls from taking over my entire house.

Enter: Mustard’s storage lockers. (Remember the owner’s green kid’s room tour? Me, too!) They’re amply sized, easy for kids to navigate, and, with a dozen gorgeous colors to choose from (like light pink plush and deep navy blue), they are simply beautiful in any room of the house.

Now through November 12, the woman-owned brand is hosting its Annual Sale, where you can score up to 25% off sitewide. This is a rare sale, so don’t wait!

How I Use Mustard’s Midi Storage Locker for Toys

An accumulation of toys can feel like a lot of clutter, and that feeling can cause all sorts of household conflicts. We want our kids to enjoy their toys, but we also very much want them off the floor in the living room so that we’re not constantly tripping over dolls or, worse, stepping on their many sole-destroying accessories.

I find that having a beautiful, relatively organized storage system goes a long way in getting kids (at least my kids) on board with the whole “putting stuff away” idea. It’s not a perfect solution; there are still grumbles when it’s time to clean up, but having a designated storage area at least gives us a home base for toys, which makes the tidying process a bit easier.

When we transitioned from our generic cube unit to Mustard’s Midi Locker, I went through the whole process with my 7-year-old so she would feel like she was in control of where and how her toys were stored. We played a quick game of “keep it or leave it” with her toy bins, pulling out any toys we wanted to donate or throw away. Next, we determined how we’d use the storage baskets (an additional purchase) to organize clothes, accessories, and bigger items, and then we got to work setting it all up.

The result is a storage system that gives my kiddo the opportunity to see all of her doll toys at a glance. Every item has its own area, which makes tidying up easier and faster for her — a huge win! And when she’s done, she can close the doors and, for an added element of protection (not that anyone’s coming for her dolls, but still), she can use the keys to lock it all up safely. (She loves having a lock and keys, and I have a back-up set just in case hers gets misplaced.)

Closed Toy Storage Always Looks Neat and Tidy

I’ve tried a lot of toy storage solutions over the years. Most of the time, we’ve used those modular cube units from Target or IKEA. I liked having different baskets for different types of toys, as well as some open shelving for books or items that my kids wanted to display or otherwise have easy access to. But the look was pretty generic, not exactly what I would call beautiful, and the openness of the unit meant that, even when toys were stored, the whole system appeared a bit messy. Mustard’s storage lockers, by contrast, are closed off so that the contents are behind two doors, so it always looks totally tidy.

Storage Lockers Are in It for the Long Haul

Another thing I love about these storage lockers is their relative indestructibility. Made of powder-coated steel, these lockers are durable and can withstand a ton of daily use (good news for my doll-obsessed child!). And they’re easy to clean. All they need is a wipe-down with a dry or damp cloth, and they’re good to go. I’m also happy to report that the flat-packed lockers were easy to assemble, according to my very nice husband who put them together for me. He was done in less than an hour with no issues.

The Bottom Line

Mustard’s storage lockers are a great choice for any kid who needs a toy storage solution (so, all of them). My family loves the Midi, which measures 33.5″w x 15.7″d x 43.7″h. Shorter versions, like the two-door Lowdown and four-door Standard, would be a good fit for a toddler’s room, while the tall, two-door Twinny would be a nice addition to a teen’s room, especially if they lack a lot of closet space. If you’re looking for a storage solution that will last kids until they go away to college (and beyond!), Mustard Made storage lockers are the way to go.
