Tour the Co-Founder of Mustard Made’s Gorgeous Green Kids’ Bedroom
Picture it: You can barely see the floor of your kid’s bedroom because toys, books, and art supplies are strewn everywhere. If only, you think, there was a way to organize the clutter and (literally) close the door on it. Well, you’re in luck.
Mustard Made, a company founded by sisters Jess and Becca Stern in 2017, designs stylish and helpful lockers that will grow with your kids as they age. They’re the perfect organizational tool for hiding kids’ clutter.
So when Becca Stern redid her two sons, Ellis and Otis’, bedroom, it’s no surprise that these handy lockers were a great addition to the space.
“My hope was to create a calming space, so I leaned into natural, earthy colours that are very much my comfort palette,” Stern writes. “With two growing boys sharing a small room, I wanted it to feel balanced and fun but not too busy.”
Lockers from Mustard Made helped to create a cohesive and clutter-free zone for Stern’s children. Specifically, two The Twinny lockers in the shade “Olive” are the boys’ wardrobes, and a The Midi in the color “Sage” for their books (which are categorized by color!).
One of Stern’s favorite things about the lockers is how they fit any parent’s needs. For example, The Twinny locker style (which is used as Ellis and Otis’ wardrobes) is customized for each kid and “is deceptively roomy inside; being able to place the shelves where you want them (or add more!) and adding or removing the rails gives them so many ways to be useful,” Stern explains.
To organize the lockers, Stern used Mustard Made storage baskets to house certain things like toys, socks, or shoes. “As a mum of three boys, I have to say that I love that I can throw things inside a locker and shut (or lock!) the door,” Stern writes. “Instant tidy, instant calm!”
Creating a tranquil space for her sons was Stern’s main objective. While she accomplishes this through clever organization hacks, color also plays a role. Before, the bedroom was actually Stern’s, and it was painted soft gray, which “didn’t give off kids’ room vibes.”
So, to “add more color and playfulness in a timeless kind of way,” Stern created a custom paint to match the sage-colored lockers. “The trick is to take a color swatch or the locker keyring to the paint shop; they can mix up a custom shade to match the color perfectly, and it always works a treat,” Stern says.
Details like the Plyroom bunk bed (Stern dubbs these the “subtle star of the space”), the built-in picture rail on the walls, the brown and white rug, and Bababi tables and stools (a brand based out of Ukraine) all work together to create a calming, playful space. “We let color and pattern do the talking and, of course, added plenty of lockers to keep the space clutter-free,” Stern says.
