Blue nursery with storage cubbies, toys, books, a red lamp, and a changing pad under a window with a Roman shade.

Whether portable lights, petite clip-ons, or stylish table lamps, cute lamps in the kids’ rooms are important (and too often an afterthought). Long ago, I read about the concept of “kindly light” — essentially choosing lighting that invites you into a room and encourages you to stay for a while — in an interior design book, and the idea has stayed with me.

For most rooms — whether it’s a playroom, child’s room, or any other room in your home — you’ll likely need more than one light source, often at different heights. If you’ve chosen fantastic lighting options (like the ones below) and you’re still not quite getting the right vibe, don’t forget about the right bedroom lightbulb! You can choose a set color temperature bulb, or get a smart option that will let you change according to your mood.

The best thing about light is that when it’s right, you probably won’t notice it much, but chances are you’ll notice the cute lamps you choose, and so will your child. We’ve rounded up some favorites to take you from the nursery to a big kid’s room, and beyond.

Cute Lamps We Love

Modern Dome Green Touch Kids Table Lamp
$129

Best Touch Lamp

This lovely little dome lamp is as practical as it is adorable. The modern silhouette and soft color finish (it comes in three options!) instantly perk up a nightstand, desk, or reading nook, but the real magic is the touch feature — just tap to turn it on or off, no tiny switch-hunting required. It’s one of those smart, why-don’t-all-lamps-do-this kinds of upgrades that makes everyday life just a little easier (and a lot cuter).

$129 at Crate & Barrel
Starry Night Musical Nightlight Projector
$89

Best Night Light Lamp

This sweet little carousel nightlight is basically bedtime magic. It gives off a soft, comforting glow that helps kids feel cozy and secure, and the gentle starry illumination adds just enough light for late-night check-ins without fully waking anyone up. It’s practical, calming, and also just really lovely to look at.

$89 at Pottery Barn Kids
BLÅSVERK Table Lamp
$20

Best Budget Lamp

This bold little lamp is proof that small pieces can make a big impact. The rounded shape feels playful and modern, and that bright pop of red instantly livens up a nightstand, desk, or shelf. It gives off a warm, cozy glow that makes any corner feel more intentional and styled — and because it’s under $20, it’s affordable enough to justify as a fun “why not?” upgrade.

$20 at IKEA
SOWDEN PL1 Portable Lamp
$79$54

Best Battery-Powered Lamp

This aluminum and silicone lamp is the height of design. It's a creation from the mind of George Sowden, who discovered that silicone is a wonderful light diffuser, in addition to being easy to clean (something most moms likely already know). It’s also rechargeable, portable, cord-free and comes in several colors from bright to dramatic black and white. Frankly, battery-powered lamps are my top pick for kids' rooms because of safety, but also for bringing swanky, necessary light wherever needed — even outside. Read more about this trend here.

$54 at MoMA Design Store
Carved Wood Giraffe Table Lamp
$179

Best Animal Lamp

I can’t help but smile when I see the giraffe peeking over the shade, which is a plus, but this is also a stunning piece. It's lots of fun, but full of grown-up style.

$179 at Pottery Barn Kids
Rainbow Mini Lamp
$185

Best Rainbow Lamp

This sweet, twinkly lamp comes in several different rainbow colorways. It’s made of pine wood and is dimmable so it can be used during the day, or at night as a night light. There’s even a remote control for easy adjustments.

$185 at Modern Nursery
Mushroom Table Lamp
$199

Best Nature-Inspired Lamp

It’s easy to love the muted, calming tones of this fun, handcrafted mushroom lamp. It’s whimsical enough for a woodland-themed nursery and it’s enough of a conversation piece for the living room. The colors are bright enough to delight your little one and tasteful enough to make you happy.

$199 at West Elm
Paper-Mache Cloud
$199

Best Cloud Lamp

Let your little ones feel like they are up among the clouds with these puffy wall-mounted lamps made of rice papier-mâché. These plug in with a clear plastic cord (switch on the cord for easy access). You can also pair it with the matching cloud pendant light.

$199 at Pottery Barn Kids
Marble Base Task Lamp
$199

Best Cute Desk Lamp

There’s a lot to love in this desk lamp. Your little one might love the iridescent shimmer and the consistent light, and your older child will enjoy having a piece that fits in with teenager decor. The marble base is a nice touch and marries well with the gold finish, which manages to be neutral and elegant.

$199 at PB Teen
Jonas Floor Lamp
$187

Best Cute Floor Lamp

This lamp is both modern and has a wonderful vintage flair — perfect for late nights and early mornings with a baby, and shining a light on art projects and storytime. I love it for the fun, round shape and for the gold finish that goes with anything, but also adds a touch of glamour.

$187 at Maisonette
Matin Table Lamp
$282

Best Cute Table Lamp

Just as comfortable and effortless on an adult nightstand as a child’s desk or dresser, this lamp (a Cubby favorite!) has a fun umbrella shape and a super-small footprint, so you’re not giving up precious space to a lamp base. It comes in a range of sweet colors and just might follow your little one to their first home away from home (if you don’t keep it).
