I’ve been shopping at Trader Joe’s for nearly a decade at this point, so trust me when I say that the key to shopping at the grocery chain is going in with a plan. The store gets far too crowded and busy (especially on a Sunday) to really wander the aisles, so knowing what I want — and from each section — is how I get in and out seamlessly. The one thing that’s on my list each and every time? Trader Joe’s Pancake Bread.

The store’s bakery section is full of excellent breads and pastries (have you checked out Trader Joe’s Sourdough Bread?!), but the beloved Pancake Bread beats them all. It may even be the best thing in the store. Period.  I’ve been buying it near-weekly for the better part of the past five years. I love it so much that I’ve received it as a birthday present (more than a few times). I eat it for breakfast and dessert, and have even delivered one to a friend getting her master’s degree in Sweden (she didn’t have access to a Trader Joe’s).

What’s So Great About Trader Joe’s Pancake Bread?

The Pancake Bread comes in a loaf and to the naked eye, looks like any other brown sugar loaf of bread. Get a bit closer and you’re immediately hit with that pancake and maple syrup scent! The bread itself isn’t overtly sweet and precisely tastes like the best buttermilk pancake you’ve ever had in bread form: slightly savory, a little bit sweet from the maple syrup, and totally buttery.

The bread itself is pillowy soft, which contrasts delightfully with the slight crunch of the sugar crumble on top. Each bite is better than the next.

The Trader Joe’s Pancake Bread is ethereal. It exists as a luxurious breakfast but also as a standout dessert. I’ve been eating it nonstop for years and have not, and will never, get sick of it.

What’s the Best Way to Enjoy Trader Joe’s Pancake Bread?

Cut into slices and eaten straight out of the container with a fork, Trader Joe’s Pancake Bread really has no wrong way to enjoy it. In fact, I’m known for just keeping a loaf of it on my counter and going at it with a spoon throughout the week. It’s great on its own, but if you really want to take it up a few notches, throw a container of it in the fridge overnight to firm (it’s very soft). In the morning, cut a slice and put it in the toaster for a few moments; top off with some butter, and your life will be changed for the better.

Trader Joe’s Pancake Bread has been my favorite bakery item from the retailer for the past few years, and it will continue to be the number-one item in my grocery list for the foreseeable future. It’s in store’s year-round, so the next time you’re in, grab a container (or two) and thank me later.
