Before & After: This Nursery Is Dramatically Color-Drenched in a Surprising Color
When Jasmine Kembel and her husband bought their home in July 2025, Jasmine was pregnant with their first child (she’s due in November!). While touring the house, the couple knew that a specific room had to be the baby’s nursery. The previous owners had used the room as their daughter’s nursery, so it made sense.
And there was another interesting similarity. “We ended up finding out their daughter’s name was Milly, and our son is going to be named Miller, so it just seemed like fate that he’d be taking over her room,” Jasmine explains.
From the beginning the couple knew that they wanted Miller to have a colorful room, rather than one with bright whites or beige tones, and for it to feel unique. It didn’t take long for them to land on a space theme, which also has ties to their childhoods. For example, they have a 1969 Snoopy manned flight awareness program poster (Jasmine was super into Peanuts when she was growing up) and a Calvin and Hobbes space scene photo (which was her husband’s favorite comic). There’s even a space-themed stamp collection, which a friend gifted!
To ensure that Jasmine’s design turned out how she envisioned it, she started by mapping out the room on Canva. Next came installing the wallpaper on two of the walls (the one she used is sold out, but here’s a similar option). Jasmine color-matched the wall and ceiling paint to the wallpaper, and then color-matched the trim and closet door paint to the Babyletto Swell crib in Cove Blue.
“The paint and wallpaper really made this room come to life,” Jasmine says. “From there, we slowly added accessories and furniture that we upcycled, thrifted, or purchased new in primary colors to provide good contrast and keep the room fun and childlike.”
It took around three months to finish the nursery, as the couple took on other projects at the same time. Jasmine says they are really proud to have decorated the entire room without going over their $2,000 budget. And she thinks the impactful, cohesively colored result will grow with Miller until he’s a teen.
“I love how cozy the room feels. Color-drenching a room in a darker tone can be intimidating, but it was so worth it and I’m so glad we did it,” says Jasmine. “The darker blues make the room feel serene and peaceful. Painting the ceiling felt like such a risk, but I don’t think the room would be anywhere as cozy without it.”
