My Baby Had Trouble Sleeping Through the Night Until I Tried This New Mattress
We’ve all been there: You are staying overnight at a hotel, or maybe at a friend or family member’s house, and the bed just doesn’t feel right. This leads to a poor night’s sleep with dreams of getting back to your own bed. We all have personal preferences when it comes to mattresses, and a perfectly cozy bed can lead to the most glorious sleep. I have started to wonder — maybe it’s possible that babies feel this way too.
Like so many little ones, my daughter started out in a bassinet next to our bed. Once she outgrew that, she moved to a mini crib. When she was about 4 months old we bought our first home as a family, and after the move we were finally able to set up a proper nursery with a full-size crib. Truth be told, I didn’t put too much thought into the mattress purchase. I figured as long as it was rated safe for babies we would be all set.
Weeks (and months) went by and she just wasn’t sleeping through the night consistently like I had hoped she would. I figured it was because her little tummy needed night feedings, or maybe it was the start of separation anxiety, or perhaps she had started teething. Night after night, I watched her on the monitor toss and turn, as if she was looking for a comfortable position. This bleary-eyed mom was ready to try anything.
Finally, I decided to try a new mattress. I heard about the SleepOvation Baby mattress and I was intrigued. The mattress has a unique design to increase airflow and to prevent overheating. It also reduces pressure on the head while keeping the baby’s spine correctly aligned.
At this point I had nothing to lose and I figured it was worth a try, so we gave it a go.
What’s Special About the SleepOvation Baby Mattress?
Construction and Details
- Price: Available in mini crib size for $374, or standard crib size for $474.
- Design: 2-stage design with one side optimized for an infant and the other side for a toddler.
- Materials, Infant Side: The infant side is made with CertiPUR-US® certified ILD 65 foam which is the firmest foam used in crib mattresses. This ensures that the cushion elements will not envelope the infant’s face, should the baby turn over in the crib.
- Materials, Toddler Side: The toddler side is made with a medium-firm CertiPUR-US® certified ILD 35 foam. This provides a very comfortable sleeping surface which allows for the proper alignment of the toddler spine which is critical for growth and development.
- Support: Each individual spring element of the inner part of the mattress is directly coupled with an individual cushion. As an individual spring is compressed, it helps distribute the high spot cranial pressures over a larger area of the infant’s skull.
- Certifications: The SleepOvation Mattress is designed with safe and healthy materials. The foam is Certipur-US and the adhesives are Greenguard certified.
- Warranty: The mattress is covered by a 5-year limited warranty, as well as a 45-day money-back mattress guarantee.
This particular mattress is specifically designed for longer, safe sleep. The technology is made for ultimate comfort, higher airflow, and cooler sleep. On top of that, the design is also meant to prevent the physical and developmental risks of positional plagiocephaly (aka flat head syndrome). The mattress also offers a 2-stage design to ensure proper spine alignment for both infants and toddlers. All you need to do is flip the mattress to the other side when the time is right. In addition, this mattress is 100% made and manufactured in the USA out of a state-of-the-art facility in New Jersey with stringent safety standards.
Did it work? My SleepOvation baby mattress review
I am not kidding you when I say my daughter’s sleep changed overnight.
After putting her down, we would watch on the monitor as she sort of snuggled herself into position without the same fuss as before. She went from waking up three times a night to sleeping from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. without as much as a whimper. I was amazed. Could it be that she just was just growing and developing and finally found a way to self-soothe into the night? Or could it be that her mattress was part of the problem all along? I can’t say for sure, but I can tell you that it certainly worked for us.
What I Don’t Like About It
The price of this mattress is higher than the one I originally purchased from Target. However, with the difference in my daughter’s sleep patterns, I wish I would have just made the investment upfront months earlier.
Because of the unique design, I have found it is a little more difficult to change the fitted sheet on this mattress than other mattresses, as it is not as rigid. I feel that is a very small quibble compared to the increased sleep quality on this product.
What Do Other Buyers Say?
The mattress has 4.5 out of 5 stars based on the SleepOvation website. One mom said, “Love this mattress! My baby was born with torticollis, which caused plagiocephaly on the left side of her head. She had to wear a cranial-cap for 3 months. I wanted to make sure that my baby would have the best mattress that would not impact her head. So glad I found the SleepOvation Infant Mattress — I can rest easy knowing her head shape won’t be negatively impacted while she sleeps. If she is going to spend 14 to 15 hours of her 24-hour day sleeping, I want to have the best mattress for her, and I believe we do with the SleepOvation Infant Mattress!”
The only negative reviews seemed to be complaints about shipping time. I did not encounter any issues with shipping time, but I can understand that if you have a child diagnosed with plagiocephaly any wait for a new product can seem like an eternity.
Would I Buy the SleepOvation Mattress Again?
In the end, I would definitely buy the SleepOvation Mattress again. In fact, my only regret was not getting it sooner. I have even found myself browsing around the SleepOvation website and wondering if my sleep and my husband’s sleep could be improved by investing in their adult mattress, or maybe even their pillows!
