The Best Twin Mattresses for Kids (After Hours of Research!)
The time had come. My four-year-old was ready for a big kid bed that she could grow into, and my ten-year-old was ready to replace their own well-worn loft bed mattress with something cozier. So, I did what I usually do: I spent countless hours online reading every round-up and review to find the best twin mattress for kids.
When I emerged from the haze of memory foam vs. innerspring, OEKO-TEX and CertiPUR-US certifications, I had a much more in-depth picture of children’s mattresses than I ever thought possible. I learned that kids at different ages require different levels of support — more firmness for younger kids and a little less for tweens and beyond.
In my research for how to choose the best twin mattress for kids, here’s what I was looking for, the options that really stood out, and what I ended up choosing for my own children.
My Top Two Picks
I chose the Siena Memory Foam Mattress for my ten-year-old because it provides comfort and support — and you can’t beat the price.
I chose the Helix Kids’ Mattress for my four-year-old because it’s designed to grow with your kid. It’s firm on one side for younger kids who need more support, and softer on the other side for older kids who want more comfort.
What I Was Looking for in a Quality Twin Mattress
When it comes to mattresses in general, and twin mattresses for kids in specific, there are a lot of choices. That’s good, in that you can certainly find one that fits your needs, but it can also be overwhelming. To cut through the noise, there were a few key things I was looking for:
- A combination of support and comfort: Because younger kids need a firmer mattress and older kids prefer something a bit cozier, I wanted something that would provide support and comfort.
- A trial period and a warranty. You never know what your kid will actually like until they sleep on it. The best mattresses offered both a sleep trial (usually between 100 days and 1 year) and a warranty of at least 10 years.
- Quality construction . Last, but not least, I was looking for high-quality materials, ideally organic and hypoallergenic, with minimal off-gassing. I didn’t discriminate between innerspring, foam, latex, and hybrid.
