Decorating a kid’s bedroom doesn’t always require a hefty financial commitment (just look at this animal-themed mural that only cost $40). When Megan McCluskie moved her family into their coastal home in Kent, United Kingdom, some tweaks had to be made to her children’s bedrooms.

However, when it came to her son Laurie’s room, those changes were smaller to stay on budget. But just because the changes aren’t massive doesn’t mean the room doesn’t feel reimagined and fresh. Initially, the space was the previous homeowner’s laundry room. Since Megan first decorated her other son, Lachlan’s, bug-themed room, she wanted to blend inspiration from that space into Laurie’s.

“We had to strip the wallpaper and plaster, and we painted the woodwork blue [Farrow & Ball’s “Stone Blue” (he wanted the same as his brother) and added a bobbin trim around the room to add a little fun to the plainer walls,” Megan explains.

Laurie was 2 years old when the family moved in, and even though his room was initially inspired by his brother’s, they’ve added some personal touches while living there. Laurie loves going to the beach, so there’s a heavy sea theme throughout, like the sea creatures on the wall, a brass fish mobile, a Meri Meri giant octopus toy, and a marlin-inspired art piece by Fiona Walker.

“Laurie’s favorite color is yellow, so we recently painted his pre-loved drawers a sunny shade,” Megan shares. “He wanted a desk corner like his brother, so we found a preloved one, and all the kids have a great library book bin in their rooms, handcrafted from Scout and Fable.”

Like Laurie’s brother’s room, Megan decided to draw inspiration from the Folie Chambre bobbin mirror in Lachlan’s room and create molding around Laurie’s room walls. “I remember painting them all sitting on the kitchen floor pregnant with their sister-to-be,” she remembers.

Laurie’s room has quickly become a place for the entire family to hang out. (It’s the only room with carpet in the whole house, so it’s super comfortable.) Plus, the bunk beds, a favorite piece of Megan’s and friends who visit, are a great place to read a book under the Pooky lighting.

“I also love the art prints above Laurie’s desk from our talented friend, Natalia Bagniewska,” Megan shares. “Each of the kids has one of her prints with their names on in their rooms and a big handmade cushion from Big Little Store.
