Child-size desk in a room with blue trim and bugs on the wall

Even though Megan McCluskie’s son Lachlan is young (six years old, to be exact!), he was still very involved in the design process of his room in their coastal house in Kent, United Kingdom. When the family first moved to the neighborhood, they’d take daily walks into town and pass a store called Moo Like a Monkey with intriguing life-size bugs from Studio Roof that you could put together and hang on the wall.

It’s no surprise that Lachlan was interested in the bug decorations, as one of his favorite activities is looking for new bugs. (He even has pet woodlice.) “Lachlan would always ask to go in the shop to look at the bugs, so we’d continue to add to his collection and make them together until it was time to put them all up,” Megan explains.

So, when it came time to decorate the desk area of his new bedroom, Megan and Lachlan thought the bug decorations were a perfect fit. But before the bugs could be displayed, they had to reimagine the room completely.

“The person who slept in the room before we purchased the house had clearly been a smoker, so we renovated this room first before Lachlan slept in it,” Megan shares. “We added a new window and blind, radiator, freshly plastered and painted walls, and removed the old carpet to sand the lovely old floor boards we happily discovered below.”

Once the renovation was completed, it was time to decorate. Lachlan was involved in every design decision Megan made. For example, Lachlan chose Farrow & Ball’s “Stone Blue” to be painted on the woodwork, and he also selected the artwork (including his fabulous bug collection).

“We found the desk and chair on Facebook Marketplace, which he sat with me hunting for — a little treasure hunter in the making,” Megan says. “I couldn’t resist adding a few seaside touches; he has a small wall-mounted shark hook to hang his school ties and beavers necker, lobster on his wall, and rattan sea creature baskets (one houses toys and the other his pajamas).”

It was important to Megan that the room be a place that Lachlan could grow into. She admits that she doesn’t “like to go too ‘nursery’ with kid’s rooms.” So far, he spends most of his time sleeping and starting the day in his room, but he’ll also use it as a play area (his sister enjoys the easy access to toys, too!) and will draw artwork for the secret gallery wall behind his armoire doors.

“I love that it feels fresh but also a safe, cozy space for him and one that can easily evolve as he grows and wants to add his own stamp more,” Megan shares. “He definitely loves his desk corner! His bed is an old day bed we had that also pulls out into a double so he can have his brother in for a sleepover.”
