Oreo’s New Limited-Edition Flavor Is So Good, We Devoured the Entire Pack in Less Than 10 Minutes

I’m a big Oreo fan. The classic sandwich cookies make everything they touch taste absolutely amazing: popsicles,  ice cream, no-bake cheesecake, you name it. While the OG is beloved for a reason and will always have a place in my heart (and a top spot in The Kitchn’s ranking), I’m always down to try new flavors. (I’m still dreaming about the Mint Chip ones from last summer.)

Well, Oreo’s latest innovation just might be the best limited-edition flavor I’ve tried yet: Chocolate Covered Pretzel. I was lucky enough to try them ahead of the official launch, and let me tell you, these did NOT disappoint. 

While Oreo has previously released dozens of specialty and limited-edition flavors, Chocolate Covered Pretzel is the brand’s first-ever sweet and salty cookie. To get that ultimate flavor combination just right, the Chocolate Covered Pretzel Oreo is made with a sweet, chocolate-flavored creme sandwiched between two pretzel-flavored cookies. Each one is adorned with flakes of salt on the outside — just like you’d find on a pretzel. 

The latest flavor officially launches in retailers nationwide (both in-store and online) on May 5 for $5.29. If you want to give this flavor a try, head to the store ASAP; it’ll only be available while supplies last. 

Chocolate-covered pretzels are one of my favorite foods of all time. I keep a bag of the Trader Joe’s dark chocolate ones stashed in my pantry. So I was curious to see if the cookie really captured the essence of the salty-sweet snack. 

Based on looks alone, I could tell this Oreo cookie was in a league of its own. This isn’t your standard Golden Oreo cookie; it’s a dark, toasty caramel color with visible little flecks of salt. It’s also slightly crumblier than other Oreo cookies I’ve had (a few broke apart easily as I tried to pick them up). The sweet aroma that escaped as I opened the package was enticing. 

One bite and I was in heaven. The salty notes were similar to biting into a pretzel, and the cookie reminded me of a mashup between a graham cracker and a salty cracker. It balanced out beautifully with the sweet and fudgy chocolate creme filling. 

True to its muse, it’s like a chocolate-covered pretzel but in cookie form. I found myself wanting more and more but exercised restraint and passed the package to some other colleagues at The Kitchn, so they could get in on the fun. Spoiler: They were equally as impressed with the newest Oreos. 

“I’m VERY into these,” says Mara, director of Groceries & Shopping. “The little flecks of salt on the outside of the cookie really bring that pretzel inspiration to life.” Quinn, senior lifestyle editor, agreed: “These are so fun and tasty, and I don’t normally like non-original Oreos. They ‘slam’ as we would say in the East Bay!” 

I would totally buy them again. The only downside is that they’re limited-edition. So, in the meantime, I’ll be stocking up while I can get my hands on them.
