Cue the first-day photos, because Kindergarten is a real milestone! You’ll want to send your kid off with a backpack that’s bigger than the mini one they may have had for preschool, but not as giant as the ones the elementary-school kids backpacks can be. You’re looking for a midi size, for ages 4 to 6, and they do exist. These are our favorites, all between 12 inches and 17 inches high to fit this age range.

Junior Original Book Pack
$35

L.L. Bean backpacks are durable classics. The straps are padded, even on the Kindergarten version. There’s a large main pocket and separate front zippered pocket that has a wide swath of reflective material across it, helping the backpack stay visible at dawn or dusk. It’s got a cupholder on one side. There are new patterns, like these dinos, and also bugs, daisies, and sharks. Add a monogram letter for an additional $8.

Dreamer Colorblock Small Kids Backpack
$44

This is so little, but looks so grown-up! The Dreamer is made with at least 30 percent recycled materials, so it’s a greener choice than some others. There’s padding on the straps, a main compartment with some organizational pockets inside, a front zippered compartment, and two water-bottle holders (one on each side). The whole thing can be machine-washed if needed. There are four color-blocked design choices, and you can add personalization for an additional $14.

Kane Fuzzy Hearts Backpack
$125

State is a give-back brand that donates backpacks to American kids through partnerships, so it’s nice to support their mission. They also happen to have some of the cutest designs! “Fuzzy Hearts” is a new one for this school year. There’s a main compartment, a front zippered pocket, and two side cupholders. Unlike some others, there’s a trolley sleeve on this backpack so it can ride atop luggage if you take it on travels.

Herschel Heritage Backpack
$45

My husband and I use Herschel bags and are impressed by their strength. I’ll admit I am also a sucker for the red and white candy-striped signature interior lining! This kids’ backpack, for ages 3 to 7, has big, easy-to-use zipper pulls for the main compartment and front pocket. There are multiple color choices and a floral pattern as well as a space pattern.

Bentgo Kids Glitter Backpack
$30

Bentgo’s backpack has two pencil-case-sized zippered pockets on the front in addition to the big main compartment, which has a laptop sleeve. (Not that your Kindergartner is carrying a laptop, but you can put a tablet in there when you travel!) There are two mesh water-bottle compartments (one on each side). Bentgo is also known for bento boxes, and they color-coordinate with the backpacks.

Mackenzie Blue Daisies Chenille Backpack
$80$63

Pottery Barn has so many fun designs for the Mackenzie backpack, and they come in sizes from mini to extra large. You’ll want the small size for your Kindergartner, which is made for kids who are between 36 to 42 inches tall. There’s a main compartment with an interior pocket, a front zippered pocket, and two side pockets. Have fun browsing through unique looks like a backpack with a dollhouse design, a Mickey and Minnie pattern, and Pokemon.
