I’ve lived in my New York City apartment for almost six years now, and in that time I’ve accumulated quite a bit of stuff. I’ve tried to become more savvy about storage and organization (writing for Apartment Therapy has certainly helped!), but sometimes having a properly organized home actually requires buying more furniture — specifically pieces that serve multiple purposes. Much to my delight, this new drop-leaf table and chair set from IKEA manages to seat four people while also allowing you to store ample items in its three drawers. It’s a small-space superhero.

What Is the IKEA NORDEN / HÖGVED Table and 2 Chairs?

As you might expect, the IKEA NORDEN / HÖGVED Table and 2 Chairs does indeed consist of a table and two chairs. The birch wood chairs and the table both have the same kind of classic bare-wood look (although you can opt for bright green chairs, if you wish), but the table has a secret. It has three sizable wooden drawers running down each side, and the tabletop has two drop leaves on either side that can be individually raised and lowered. When both are raised it can seat four, and when both are lowered you still get a slice of countertop to use.

At its smallest the table is about 10.25 inches long, and at its biggest it’s almost 60 inches. It’s 31.5 inches wide and 29 inches tall. The chairs are about 18 inches wide, 21 inches deep, and 31.5 inches tall. The whole set runs you $549.99, which is definitely a bit of a splurge. But when you think about it, you’re getting more than just a table and two chairs — you’re getting four different types of table, two chairs, and six drawers of built-in storage. That’s not nothing!

Why This IKEA Furniture Set Is So Useful

This multifaceted table and chairs set from IKEA is obviously a smart choice for small spaces. If you don’t have room to display the table at full size, keep it at half size. If you don’t even have room for that (or need to free up room for a party or gathering), keep both leaves folded up and use it as a kitchen island or side table. Even at its smallest, there are six entire drawers for all those odds and ends you couldn’t fit elsewhere. You also don’t have to use the chairs with the table; they’re neutral enough to go anywhere in the home.

However, the adaptable nature of this set also means it could be put to good use in any kind of living space, or even somewhere like an office or art studio. Who knew a simple wooden table and chairs would contain such multitudes?
