Have you spotted teeny-tiny doors popping up all over TikTok and Instagram? The “fairy door” trend — in which you install miniature doors along the baseboards of a room — is opening up big-time imagination for kids (and their whimsy-driven parents).

I love that there’s no one right way to create a fairy door in your kids’ room. After a quick Google search, I found multiple fairy doors and fairy door kits at popular stores like Etsy, Dollar Tree, Michaels, World Market, and more. Some of them are already pre-made so all you have to do is use the included adhesive to stick them to your wall. Others come with paint so you and your littles can customize them first.

Some kits include backdrop images to place behind the door, while others include seasonal accessories so you can decorate for various holidays. (If you live in a rental and want that security deposit back, something that removes easily with minimal fuss is always a good idea!)

I’ve also spotted parents who are going even more of a DIY route. For example, Instagrammer Elizabeth Homen painted a rainbow-sky scene on the wall behind her daughter’s fairy door. The Instagram reactions are priceless: “I’m 56 and I want this in my room! And I don’t even have kids!!! lol” said one viewer. “Gosh, it makes me wanna have a fairy door in my bedroom. Maybe I’ll do that. You can do anything you wanna do. Whatever brings you joy and just seeing this post brought me immense joy. My four-year-old granddaughter would absolutely love it if I had a fairy door in my bedroom,” shared another. Parents can provide little treats and notes from the fairy visitors, to take it up another notch.

A few ambitious decorators aren’t just installing a door — they’re creating a fairy nook. This often includes cutting into the wall to create a fully decorated compartment (think: Stuart Little). If you do go the full installation route, be aware of where you’re cutting so you don’t accidentally cut electrical wires or critical support beams. (For a much simpler hack, you could take a note from TikToker @homewithdeepika and hot glue a fairy door to an outlet cover for a two-step craft that imbues magic without much mess.)

Fairy doors aren’t new, but I love that the trend is picking up steam right now — and the memories made may last for years to come. One mom, @Katie.Williams.life, shared how her now-grown children (and their friends) still love seeing the little fairy door she installed when they were younger. Most of the kits I found were under $20, which makes them a fun and affordable arts and crafts activity that would appeal to all ages. I’ve already got a few bookmarked in my shopping folder to try with my daughter!
