I Thought My Kids Ruined My Rug, But This Heavy-Duty Steam Cleaner Made It Look New (It Was So Gross!)
Life in a small apartment can get chaotic super fast. My roommates include a 3-year-old in the middle of potty training and a 6-year-old who loves Play-Doh and markers, which means I face unexpected messes and stains all the time. My cordless vacuum works great for daily cleanup, but I realized my carpets, rugs, and upholstery had never received a true deep clean. That’s what brought me to request a sample of the Bissell Revolution HydroSteam to test. It turned out to be the ideal solution — and after passing it along to family members, they’ve became just as into it as I am. Here’s why I love it.
What Is the Bissell Revolution HydroSteam?
The Bissell Revolution HydroSteam is a versatile deep cleaner designed to break down even the most stubborn, set-in stains on upholstery and carpets using a mixture of water, steam, and specialized cleaning formula.
Equipped with Bissell’s advanced Hydrosteam Technology and an XL DirtLifter PowerBrush, this heavy-duty unit features a targeted Steam Pretreat mode designed to loosen deeply embedded fibers. While its generous 1-gallon clean water tank ensures impressive performance, its hefty 20-pound weight and sizable frame (42″ H x 16.5″ W x 11.9″ D) do mean it requires ample storage space (this is not a small machine!). Equipped with a 20-foot power cord and a 7-foot hose, it easily maneuvers across high-traffic zones, area rugs, staircases, and pet beds. The complete package includes a spraying crevice tool for furniture and stairs, two trial-size cleaning formulas, a nozzle clean-out tool, and a 4-inch brush clean-out tool.
My Honest Review of the Bissell Revolution HydroSteam
Before I brought home the Bissell Revolution HydroSteam, I wasn’t entirely sure it would be a practical choice for me. Its larger footprint made me wonder if it would feel too bulky in my space — but my carpets were desperately in need of a deep refresh.
I started by reviewing the instruction manual to assemble everything, which I’d suggest to anyone using it for the first time. The manual highlights crucial details — like reminding you that the HydroSteam isn’t built for standard dry vacuuming and shouldn’t be used to pick up heavy pet hair or loose dirt. Because of that, giving the floor a thorough vacuum first is an essential step. Putting the unit together was simple and straightforward, and it features an integrated cord wrap to neatly store its long power cable.
If you’re dealing with stubborn, set-in marks, you have the option to start with a pretreatment pass. My rugs didn’t have any noticeable spots, so I skipped this step and went right to the main cleaning pass.
To get started, you fill the clean water tank, which is kept completely separate from the dirty water container. You can select from three tailored cleaning modes: Steam Pretreat, which applies direct heat to loosen stubborn grime; SteamWash Max Clean Mode, designed for a complete deep clean using formula, water, and steam; and Quick Dry Mode, which reduces moisture for faster drying. Even with its solid, heavy-duty build, the smooth-rolling wheels allow the steam cleaner to glide with surprising ease. While Bissell notes that drying can take up to eight hours, I used the Quick Dry Mode and was thrilled to find my rugs dry in only 30 minutes.
Operating the machine is simple: You plug it in, select your preferred setting with the mode toggle, and push the foot pedal to recline the handle. To clean the carpets, you make “wet passes” by holding down the spray trigger on the handle, followed by “dry passes” with the trigger released to pull out the moisture. Keep making passes until the clear front nozzle stops showing water extraction. Just keep in mind that the HydroSteam is kind of noisy, so don’t run it during nap time!
Switching to stairs or furniture is equally easy using the provided hose and crevice attachment. Simply select either SteamWash or Quick Dry mode, hold the tool against the fabric or step, and pull the trigger while applying firm downward pressure as you pull it toward you. When you’re finished, flushing out internal debris is easy — just let the machine suction up a bowl of clean water for about 15 seconds.
Watching the dirty water tank fill up with dark, murky liquid was very gross, but seeing the immediate difference was so satisfying that I wanted to keep cleaning. The brush attachments detach easily for simple post-cleaning care, and the sheer volume of hidden dirt this unit extracts is amazing.
Even though the Bissell HydroSteam is designed with larger living spaces in mind, it worked wonders on the low-pile rugs and upholstered furniture in my compact apartment. It even managed to lift dried Play-Doh that had been crushed into the rug, leaving the fibers looking refreshed and like new. It’s an impressive cleaner that can completely transform your rugs, couches, and chairs — and could work great with pets, too!
