One of the best parts of childhood is undoubtedly the sleepover. From movies and popcorn to board games and laughing fits that last until your sides hurt, sleepovers are where some of the best core memories. And while many of us happily shared beds with friends or rolled out a cozy sleeping bag growing up, nothing was better than getting to your friend’s house and finding out they had a trundle bed.

Trundle beds — you know, those stylish two-in-ones that feature a second bed that rolls out from underneath — are the ultimate sleepover bed. They’re also a great alternative to the traditional toddler bed, as they tend to be a bit closer to the floor than most other beds, something that can help worried parents sleep better as their little ones adjust to their big kid bed.

Keep reading to find out what to look for, plus our top 10 picks for the best kids trundle beds that have both style and substance.

What to Look for in a Trundle Bed

Buying a trundle bed (or any big kid bed for that matter) is a long-term decision. You want to choose something that your littles will love now, but also for years to come. Here are a few things to look for before you “Add to cart.”

  • Solid construction. It’s likely your kids will jump on this bed because they’re kids. Anything with a solid wood frames is a good bet.
  • Timeless design. We’re not saying you can’t have some fun, but choosing something that’s not overly kiddish will ensure your tween won’t suddenly refuse to sleep in their bed. Or, if your little is already nearing their tweenage years, consider something they won’t mind sleeping on when they come home from college.
  • Mattress requirements. Trundle beds often require a thinner, trundle-specific mattress. In some cases, you might be able to get away with buying a mattress from an independent retailer like Leesa or Saatva, but some beds will only work with a mattress from the same brand.
  • Size. Most of the beds on our list are for a twin bed, but you may want to consider a full-size trundle bed for bigger kids or if the trundle bed might eventually end up in a guest room.
