I’m all about sipping on a frosty concoction come summer. Two years ago I was big into the painkiller cocktail (a boozy tiki classic), and last summer this piña colada was my warm-weather companion. But this summer I can’t stop making whipped lemonade. With two young kids running around, I’m always on the hunt for a non-alcoholic, keep-you-cool drink that works for the whole family. This drink hits all the notes: It’s instantly refreshing, just sweet enough, and perfectly creamy. Pop in a straw and you’re ready to chill.

What Makes Whipped Lemonade So Good

This three-ingredient drink comes together in a flash with pantry staples. Simply squeeze some lemons, then combine the juice with heavy cream and sweetened condensed milk in a blender. Seriously, that’s it!

Now, I’m not a big fan of lemonade in general because I often find it too tart or too sweet (or both), but this version is well-balanced, thanks to the use of cream and condensed milk. It tastes like a mash-up of cold lemonade and a milkshake — and my kids can’t get enough of it. Since I first made it a couple of months back while testing it for our culinary producer Kelli, they’ve asked me to make it at least once a week. I don’t always say yes, but when I do I’ll make it and split the batch between the two of them (the recipe makes one drink). They’re perfectly happy with their frozen treat.

And while Kelli says you can add a pour of your favorite spirit into the blender for a boozy version, I haven’t tried it myself yet. Our Executive Editor, Lauren Miyashiro, confirms though that it’s delicious with white rum. (I imagine tequila would work too!)

How to Make Whipped Lemonade

  1. Blend ice cubes, heavy cream, fresh lemon juice, and sweetened condensed milk in a blender until smooth.
  2. Pour in a glass, top with whipped cream and a slice of lemon if you like, and sip.
