I Just Found a Gift-Wrapping Hack on TikTok That I Think Will Actually Change My Life (It Saves Time AND Money!)
Gift-wrapping is a skill that only some people possess. I am not “some people.” I found this out decades ago when I first attempted to wrap holiday gifts on my own — it seemed easy in theory, but I realized it actually required a certain degree of finesse.
Luckily I married an expert gift-wrapper. He is meticulous and precise with his cutting, folding, and taping, and he’s always the one to wrap the presents in our household. But when it comes time to give a gift to my husband, I am unfortunately the person who has to do the wrapping. He loves admiring my handiwork — there’s always something that’s guaranteed to be slightly amiss.
One signature move of mine is cutting the paper too short, and then either crumpling it up in frustration, cutting it into makeshift cards to attach to the top of gifts, or covering the gap where the paper doesn’t meet with another strip of paper.
So I was thrilled to find this video from TikTok user Tracie Garrett (beeandblooms) demonstrating a simple-yet-ingenious fix for this common problem.
“What’s worse than losing your tape or scissors 100 times while wrapping? Cutting the paper too short! 😩 Don’t worry — you can still use it! Save it for a smaller item, or try turning the box diagonally. It won’t work every time, but if the paper covers all four corners, you’re good to go. Hope this helps! 🙂” Tracie says in the caption.
The video begins with all-too-familiar footage of an item sitting on a piece of paper that’s not quite big enough to wrap around it. Tracie shows a couple of attempts at folding the paper over the gift, but it just won’t meet in the middle — until it’s turned diagonally. Once the item is in the center of this diamond shape, it’s easy to fold the top corner down and the bottom corner up, and then the other two corners follow suit. Once all the corners have been taped, Tracie flips the wrapped gift over to reveal a neat, taut finished product. You’d never know the paper was “too small” to begin with.
While this tip is not original to this particular TikToker (you can see other versions here and here), I’m so grateful to have come across it. It really shows how a small shift in perspective can change the whole outcome (coincidentally, also a good life lesson as we head into the hectic holiday season!).
So the next time you’ve got the wrapping paper out, whether it’s for the winter holidays or a kid’s birthday party, try this method when you inevitably cut a piece too short. You’ll feel like a gift-wrapping hero.
