This Tiered Hamper Makes Sorting Laundry a Breeze

Some days, I want to have a chat with my past self to let her know how easy she had it. I used to complain about the one weekly bag of laundry I had to do in the washing machine just across the hall from my college freshman dorm room. What would she think if I told her she’d one day be washing clothing, sheets, towels, and delicates for the whole family? I’d have to comfort her with the fact that wiser folks than I have figured out ways to make laundry easier.

Instagram creator and mother of four Jessica Conboy (@pineconesandpacifiers) recently showed off the “genius” four-tiered vertical laundry basket she uses in an Instagram Reel. “[It] lets you sort the laundry on the spot!” she wrote in her caption. “I use this for my 4 kids but you can also use it to sort by drawer and easily roll laundry around the house.”

Whether you have one kid, four kids, or none, sorting laundry is a hassle. Even if you don’t believe in separating lights from darks and always wash everything in cold water, it’s best not to wash towels with your delicates. If you’re doing laundry for multiple family members at once, you’ll need to sort when it’s clean. As Conboy says, using a laundry basket with multiple buckets helps you sort it straight out of the dryer. Kids can even do it themselves when they’re old enough to know which is their designated basket. 

The basket Conroy recommends in her post was unavailable when I first checked, but it looks like it’s back in stock now! Since it doesn’t have any reviews yet, though, I found one I like even better — the delightfully named Storage Maniac Vertical Rolling Hamper. It comes in three different sizes: two-tier (with a capacity of 21 gallons/80 liters), three-tier (31.7 gallons/120 liters), and four-tier (42.3 gallons/160 liters).

A cute touch is the faux-leather blank labels on the front of each basket, where you can write the names of your kids or the category of laundry you’d like each basket to hold. I also appreciate how much space these baskets save by stacking vertically, as opposed to the wider side-by-side sorting baskets I’ve seen. 

These baskets are on a tilt that makes them easy to reach into, and the whole thing is on wheels, so you can roll it down the hall into a laundry room, if it’s on the same floor. If your washing machine is on a different floor, however, you still have options. The sides of these polyester baskets are attached to the stand with Velcro that you can detach to lift the whole thing out and carry with the handles that are tucked inside. (This seems like a slightly awkward process with a full basket, and most reviewers on Amazon report that they prefer to roll the whole cart around the house.) 

Now, if they could just figure out how to make a hamper that will fold everything and put it away on its own, I’d be really happy!
