This Cottagecore Bedroom Is a Master Class in Kid Room Sharing (and Adorable!)
Making a shared bedroom work for two kids is a definite challenge — and creating a space for three daughters in one room takes it to a whole new level. That’s the design hurdle Brittany Turner embraced in her three-bedroom home. The result? An English cottage-inspired bedroom that still feels functional and cozy.
Because Brittany’s daughters are young and can’t quite communicate their design choices to her yet, she leans into styles she likes and chooses items and colors she thinks they’d appreciate. The room has changed a lot over the past four years, Brittany admits. The most recent iteration is filled with ditzy florals and thin stripes, deep dusty rose, and dark forest green.
Brittany, who says she’s fortunate to collaborate with brands on her home makeovers, begins all of her projects with a Pinterest mood board. Once she lands on an aesthetic, she always takes a trip to Lowe’s to find paint for the trim and selects a wallpaper. “Because I rely heavily on wallpaper to transform a space, I usually reach out to my favorite wallpaper brand, Artza & Co., to see if they would be interested in collaborating on that specific project,” Brittany explains.
In the case of their daughters’ room, though, before Brittany and her husband could start applying the paint and wallpaper they selected, they had to remove the room’s existing wallpaper — which proved to be tricky. “It was very tedious and extremely messy,” Brittany remembers. “Because we wanted to change the wallpaper, we had no choice but to power through the process, and thankfully, it was only one wall in each room that had traditional wallpaper.”
Brittany’s favorite part of the design process is thoughtfully placing charming decor pieces throughout a room, so she took her time sourcing knickknacks for the space from thrift stores and her own collection of home decor pieces.
Fitting three children into a room is a tight squeeze, but Brittany says her daughters wouldn’t have it any other way. The two beds are separated by a crib, but they’re essentially all touching. Two dressers (one in the room and one in the closet) are used to fit all of their clothing. Brittany also removed mirrored closet doors and replaced them with patterned floral drapes to complement the wallpaper.
Along the way, Brittany’s learned a few things about decorating a shared bedroom. “Keep it simple and have fun. If your babies are not old enough to have an opinion about their spaces, source things that you think represent their personalities,” she urges. “As they grow older and begin having an interest in their space, include them in the decision-making. Allow them to choose colors that you wouldn’t choose. Be willing to compromise on your aesthetic for the sake of their childhood.”
