This Colorful Boy’s Room Has a Bright Yellow Bed and ‘Monster’ Drawers
Name: Oscar (5)
Location: Den Bosch, the Netherlands
Room Size: 3.5 x 3.5 meters
As told to us by: His mother, Wendel Visser
I’m not sure if it was the bright yellow bed, the wall of beautiful books, or the fabulous wallpaper, but it was love at first sight when I laid eyes on Oscar’s room. I’ve always been drawn to spaces that combine both vintage and modern pieces, and I absolutely adore both bright white spaces and those filled with bold colors. This room is the perfect union of all of those elements.
How would you describe the look and feel of this room?
“I would describe his room as a playful mix between vintage and modern pieces. We moved here when he was two-years-old and I wanted to create a colorful boy’s room. He always liked lots of color (not just blue!), so I mixed that with some ’50s pieces (they are my weak spot, who doesn’t love those tilted little legs?).”
What is your favorite piece or element?
“My absolute favorite piece in his room is his yellow bed. It’s a ’50s junior bed that I found online on Marktplaats, which is kind of the Dutch eBay. Of course it wasn’t yellow at that point but blue (again with the blue). It took quite a few layers of yellow to make it this bright, but he absolutely loves it.
We are looking for a new bed though; Oscar is five now and he’s starting to grow out of it. I’m going to miss this bed so much!”
What was the biggest challenge decorating this room?
“I guess the biggest challenge has been decorating on a budget, but it’s also kind of the greatest thing about his room. I like to thrift shop, search online and find unique pieces and make them my own, whether it’s a ton of yellow paint or some adhesive foil on a chest of drawers to make a ‘monster chest.'”
What do your friends say about the room?
“Most people immediately fall in love with his wallpaper. It’s not a children’s wallpaper, but one designed by fashion designer JC de Castelbanjac. It seems to be a perfect match for both children and adults!
And then there is the yellow bed which sort of has its own life over on Pinterest, so we’ve only ever heard lovely things about his room.”
Do you have any advice for parents creating a room for their child?
“My advice would be to find that fine line between too childish and too adult. I think a child’s room should be playful and not just a reflection of your own taste. This means listening to your kids.
Now that Oscar is a little older and we’re talking about a new bed I want to take his wishes seriously. It’s his room after all! In the past I always tried to get into his mind and fill the room with stuff I know he likes, like the ‘monster’ chest of drawers.”
If money were no object, what’s your dream source?
“If money was no object, I really think I wouldn’t change that much about the room. I love the challenge of creating things myself, and I think a budget makes you more creative.
If anything, I’d probably get different curtains and spend a little more on bedding. Also I think I might just get him and his sister this bed by Rafa Kids. Then again, I might just build my own!”
