Two twin beds with patterned quilts, decorative pillows, a rattan nightstand, and yellow rain boots on a rug.

Katie Bowling’s daughters share a room, and they were ready to give that room an upgrade. “We really wanted to part with the accent wall and create a more cohesive feel for the whole room,” Katie (@katebowlinghome) explains. “The girls are growing, and we wanted to add some extra storage as well.”

It was important to Katie that her daughters loved the new space, so she included them in most of the redesign. For example, the girls fell in love with @nestingwithgrace content creator Brooke Christen’s daughters’ bedroom. However, they wanted to put their own spin on it.

“We loved the simplicity of a stripe wallpaper and that they could grow with the room, and felt like pairing the paper with a fun trim color [Benjamin Moore’s Stratton Blue] made the room more interesting,” Katie says.

Once they had a jumping-off point, the family sourced additional inspiration online and in magazines. Next was finding furniture and decor — preferably thrifted — that worked with their budget and the room’s new vision. Finally, Katie put it all together in a Canva layout. Then, it was time to make those purchases, including Spoonflower’s blue striped wallpaper and Tov Furniture’s rattan nightstand

Not everything in the new room was brand-new, though. The whimsical floral chandelier from the original homeowners stayed, as did the Jenny Lind-inspired beds previously found on Facebook Marketplace. The family is still working on a bookshelf for more storage, but they also cleverly store LEGOs underneath the bed

The new space is perfect for the girls now —  and it’s a space that can keep evolving as they do.

“I love that it feels a little more mature, but still childlike. I love that it’s a space they can grow with,” Katie says. “I love that they mostly enjoy sharing a space together. They’d rather be in the same room than have a room to themselves, and I think it’s fun to have a sibling to share the space with.”
