This Kitchen Went from Basic to Beautiful After This Family Gave It A Pink Makeover
Name: Vanessa Béland, husband Félix & baby daughter
Location: Saint-Hubert, Québec
Size: 1100 square feet + basement
Years lived in: 4 years
Vanessa and Félix have been cultivating their first home together over the past four years. Taking the renovation process room by room, they have transformed the space into a warm — and very pink! — home that reflects their bright and fun-loving personalities. As self-described homebodies, much of their free time and weekends are spent on DIY projects, such as their bed, and renovating the kitchen top to bottom completely on their own. And they make a great team: Vanessa said that she is the mastermind behind the design ideas and Félix is the one who brings her ideas to life. When Vanessa couldn’t find curtains that she liked for the nursery, she bought the fabric and Félix sewed them up. In addition to blogging, Vanessa also runs an online design-based shop called Fleur Maison that features original products. Finally, when they are not busy with home projects they like to lay low in their living room.
Apartment Therapy Survey:
My Style: Scandi-boho
Inspiration: @hejustudio, Elle Decor, Domino mag, love getting inspired by graphic design also and for sure Pinterest is my all-time favorite inspiration source.
Favorite Element: A vintage map that we brought back from our trip to Rome and had framed in a golden frame.
Biggest Challenge: Adding character and interest to a basic 1980s bungalow and dealing with our dark flooring that we didn’t choose and really regret not changing before moving in when we first bought our home.
What Friends Say: That it is so us and feels rather large and open.
Biggest Embarrassment: Our bathroom shower/bath combo that we hide behind a white shower curtain. It’s old and needs to be renovated ASAP. It has this ugly old tile with kitsch pattern on it and the tub is actually grey. Can’t wait to tackle this.
Proudest DIY: Our bed frame that is a basic IKEA bed on which we created a beautiful headboard with vinyl that we weaved around it. Love the matching bench that my husband built all by himself.
Biggest Indulgence: I would say the whole kitchen. It was our first big reno and we went all out with a marble countertop and a waterfall end and said yes to pink cabinets even though it’s not conventional. We really went with what we wanted versus what would resell the best.
Best Advice: To paint everything with a fresh coat of white paint when buying a new place; it makes the biggest difference and offers a fresh start. Everything looks better. And to take your time while choosing furniture and what spaces are going to be used for; you need to live in your home for a bit before establishing your needs.
Dream Sources: Love everything that Anthropologie does and would dream about owning some furniture, which are way out of my budget and country. My dream chairs are the Tanner dining chairs in rose blush from Barnaby lane.
