Parents Are Using This $13 Kids’ Item to Make Iced Coffee — And It’s Pretty Brilliant
As a parent to an almost 6-year-old, I am still amazed at how much stuff comes with the territory of raising a kid. While we try to be mindful about what we bring in, and stay on top of regular decluttering, there’s one area in our home that’s comically overstuffed: the water bottle shelf. Yes, we have a whole shelf dedicated to water bottles in one of our kitchen cabinets.
If you, too, have an assortment of drinking vessels in various shapes, sizes, colors, and materials, then you might have an Owala Kids’ Tumbler kicking around your kitchen. And, as it turns out, it’s not just for kids!
Right now the kids’ tumblers — which are, essentially, sippy cups — are trending on TikTok for being ideal vessels for to-go iced coffee. TikTokers are touting the cups’ spill-resistance and perfect portability.
TikTok user a n g e l i c a 🌟(@aangelica.torres) posted a video demonstrating how to make a to-go iced coffee in one of these cups, starting by scooping ice into the cup, then pouring coffee over the top (using a frozen espresso ball “to chill the coffee before touching the ice”). Angelica followed that up with a splash of milk, then a spray of cold foam and a dash of cinnamon, before screwing on the lid with the straw attached — and tipping the bottle upside-down to show just how secure that spill-resistant straw and lid really are.
Based on the comments, it seems like people are very into this idea: “As a society we yearn for a sippy cup,” one commenter astutely notes. “I’m a grown adult and about to buy this for myself because it’s a leakproof straw,” says another. (Honestly, same.)
But wait, I know what you might be thinking: Does this tumbler fit in car cup holders? In another video, Angelica replies to that very question by easily placing the cup in a car’s cup holder — it does indeed fit perfectly. (So you can rest assured that you can bring your iced beverage with you for morning drop-offs.)
User teachertastes (@teachertastes) also shared an iced-coffee-making demo, saying, “Whoever shared this hack, I am forever indebted to you!!!” The video finishes with the (now signature) spill-resistant straw demonstration: a quick flip of the cup upside-down.
“This is your sign to get a kids’ Owala tumbler for your morning iced coffees,” TikTok user Valeria (@valerianotmalaria5) says at the start of their video demonstrating how to make another delicious-looking iced coffee in the cup.
Not into iced coffee? Don’t worry — user Mia (@dailybevxmia) has a video showing how to make iced matcha in the cup as well.
If your kiddo isn’t too keen on sharing their sippy cup with you, or if you don’t have one on your water bottle shelf yet, then you can purchase the Kids’ Tumbler from Owala. The cups come in 15-ounce BPA-free plastic for $12.99.
