The IKEA donut lamp that continues to rock every decor-obsessed corner of the internet has just undergone a pretty sweet transformation, and it’s a colorful one fit for your little one’s bedroom or playroom. The latest iteration of the IKEA VARMBLIXT now features color-changing and dimmable light, owing to newly integrated smart technology.

Fans of the amber-glow original VARMBLIXT that first went viral on TikTok a few years ago can exhale a sigh of relief; the orange-glass LED lamp that started it all isn’t going anywhere.

Its newcomer counterpart, which was announced in January but just (finally!) went on sale, features a soft, matte, white glass surface. Like the original, it costs $99.99 and can hang on a wall or hold court on a table (though it should go without saying that it’s made of glass and should be kept out of little arms’ reach).

The big difference, though, is in the light’s colors. With the included BILRESA remote, the lamp transitions seamlessly between 12 preset colors chosen by its designer, Sabine Marcelis. If you connect the lamp to IKEA’s DIRIGERA smart home system, you can apply more than 40 shades, sync your lighting to your day, change light intensity, and use a dimming function. Using the Matter standard via the hub, it’s compatible with platforms including Amazon, Apple, Google, Homey, and Samsung.

Also launching in the VARMBLIXT family is a smart pendant, which transitions through different hues of white, from cool white to candlelit, and is also controllable via remote.

I can already picture the new white VARMBLIXT donut lamp doing a few jobs at once: turned on in book corners as a “quiet time” cue, easing the nursery into bedtime mode, and glowing in a toddler’s bedroom to ward off any fears of the dark.
