ICYMI, IKEA has been rolling out new versions of older pieces this year as part of their special 80th anniversary line, the Nytillverkad collection. This includes revivals of some of IKEA’s greatest hits — like the 1973 stackable DOMSTEN stool and the LÖVET table (aka the company’s very first flat-pack piece of furniture) — with fresh palettes and modern materials. For the latest installment, they’re now revamping one of their most iconic styles from the 1980s: the KLIPPAN loveseat.

IKEA announced via Instagram that they plan to roll out three new KLIPPAN colors starting this month: bright red, blue, and yellow. These punchy primary hues are a nod to the brand’s 1984 catalog, which featured the KLIPPAN on the cover.

Originally created by IKEA designer Noboru Nakamura, the minimalist KLIPPAN sofa debuted in 1980 and has been part of the product roster ever since (unlike some other pieces in the Nytillverkad collection, which were previously discontinued). IKEA’s website notes that the structural design of the couch hasn’t changed much over the past 44 years, but different cover colors and patterns have been introduced over time.

KLIPPAN’s washable covers have arguably helped maintain its popularity, although up until now they’d only been available to shop in black, gray, and green. These three new primary Nytillverkad covers not only add a much more fun pop of color to your living room, but they also appear to have a more noticeably tufted design for added dimension. If you already own a KLIPPAN sofa frame or plan to buy one, you can even swap out different covers every few years for an entirely new look.

In addition to the KLIPPAN cover reboot, this new installment of the Nytillverkad collection will upgrade another fan-favorite furniture style, the POÄNG armchair (formerly known as POEM from its 1970s release). Also designed by Nakamura, the slightly reclined, sculptural seat — which you may already have a version of at home — will be available in new upholstery colors and frame finishes: black, beige, birch veneer, and red combinations.

The fact that the KLIPPAN and POÄNG have stayed in style for over four decades proves that they’re not going anywhere any time soon, either. They’re both small-space-friendly, minimalist, and functional enough to be your go-to living room furniture MVPS — even as your style and space evolve. Shop either of these online or at your nearest IKEA store, and check out the new contemporary color options.
