Mountain decal in kids bedroom.

Creating a cozy and welcoming space for my kids in their rooms is incredibly important to me. When they come home from school or feel overwhelmed, I want their rooms to be an inviting place to relax and unwind. In lieu of wallpaper (and the hundreds of hand-painted stars I painstakingly adorned my daughter’s walls with), I bought this vinyl mountain decal to cover an entire wall of my boys’ room. It was surprisingly easy to put up, and it makes the room feel so cozy and inviting.

Let’s get one thing straight right off the bat: I am not crafty, and interior decor does not come naturally to me. So trust me when I say it’s amazing how easily this decal brought the whole space together.

Installing the Decal

Before installing the decal, I tried out a few paint samples in various shades of blue and green. I chose to go with a dark blue paint that looks like the sky behind the decal. I used the color Down Pour from HGTV HOME by Sherwin-Williams in an eggshell finish. To find the right size, I measured the wall and found that I needed the 136″W x 75″H, which arrived in three panels. My husband and I installed the peel-and-stick decal together in about 30 minutes. I probably could have installed it myself, but it would have taken much longer and been much more difficult.

The hardest part was lining each panel up correctly. I’m not sure if we just got lucky or the panels are really that easy to install, but we were able to line them up perfectly on our first try. The decal also came with complete instructions and an application tool that helped us smooth out the panels and get rid of any air bubbles. When we were finished installing the decal, we had to trim about an inch off of one side to stop it from wrapping around to the next wall.

The decal works best on smooth paint over drywall. Even though I have plaster walls, the decal adhered perfectly. To complement the mountain decal, I also ordered this “adventure awaits” decal in white to put on the opposite wall.

Final Results

Guests in our home are always amazed at how good the decal looks, and even my husband (who generally doesn’t care about any decor in our home) admits that this is his favorite room in our house. It gives off a very calm and relaxing vibe, which is just what I wanted for my two very energetic boys.

If you’re looking for a relatively easy way to instantly transform your child’s bedroom, I highly recommend a wall decal like this one. Etsy is full of similar wall murals for various themes and interests. It’s much easier and much less permanent than wallpaper. If my boys decide they want a different look as they get older, we’ll be able to pull the decal off to start fresh in mere minutes.
