I Bought a Few Pieces from IKEA’s New Marimekko Collection and They Are Perfect for My Daughter’s Nordic-Style Nursery
Marimekko products are a source of national identity and pride for Finns as well as Finnish Americans, like myself. The bold patterns and bright colors bring a sense of cheer to even the darkest winter days. You will find Marimekko items throughout my home and clothes closet, and, of course, I have found ways to incorporate Marimekko into my daughter’s nursery decor.
The History of Marimekko
The chic mid-century modern style began gaining popularity in the United States in the 1960s when Jackie Kennedy wore Marimekko dresses on the campaign trail, as well as on the cover of Sports Illustrated magazine. More recently, Marimekko offered collaborations with well-known brands and retailers such as Target, adidas, Uniqlo, and, now, IKEA.
When I heard that my favorite Finnish brand was going to team up with the Swedish home furnishings giant, I was thrilled. As soon as the products debuted at IKEA I headed out to my local store. The collaborative collection is called BATSUA and is inspired by Nordic sauna culture. The limited-edition collection consists of a variety of items like furniture, glassware, and textiles with vibrant prints. While the collection revolves around items one would traditionally use while enjoying a sauna, I found the products to be quite versatile and found ways to incorporate them into my daughter’s nursery as well as throughout the house. (Quick hack: The sauna towel looks amazing as a table runner!)
The first item I picked up was the birch side table. This has taken up residency right next to the rocking chair in our nursery and is the perfect place to set some of my daughter’s favorite books at bedtime. I love that the table has a ledge, so anything I place on there won’t fall off easily. The table is also versatile, because you can purchase a whimsical tray from the collection that will fit perfectly on top. It is a clever feature that can change the whole look and use of the table with one simple addition.
I also like to keep a water bottle nearby (why is it so hard to remember to hydrate as a new mom?) as well as the small pink shopping bag, which has become a convenient diaper bag for short trips.
In fact, the large, 19-gallon shopping bags have been some of my favorite finds from the collection. I picked up a couple of bags in both patterns, and have found them to be endlessly useful in the nursery and throughout the house. I started using one of them in the nursery as a way to quickly pick up and collect toys. I tucked the other one next to the couch in our family room as a place to store extra blankets. At $4.99 each, I think these are a stylish steal.
If you want to add a burst of color to your home this spring, definitely stop by IKEA and check out the Marimekko collection!
