IKEA Has the Cleverest Hack for Getting Rid of Kid Art Clutter (Buy It Before It’s Discontinued!)
My 3-year-old’s artwork is piling up in every spare corner of my house — and between his collection and his younger sister’s budding body of work, there are very few corners left. That’s why I’m so intrigued by TikToker and mom Kaaylaannee’s hack for displaying art: an easy-to-install and inexpensive curtain rod from IKEA with accompanying clips that can be strung across a playroom.
Go collect the markered-up construction paper that’s floating around the family room, the finger paintings that are sitting in the storage ottoman, the coloring book pages stacked and magnet-ed to the fridge, and the feathered, paper-plate turkey that kindergarten sent home last Thanksgiving. There’s room for all on IKEA’s stainless steel DIGNITET curtain wire, which, at $16, is a steal. It’s 197 inches long and, according to IKEA, can easily be cut shorter. All you’ll need to attach your kids’ crafts are IKEA’s RIKTIG curtain hooks, which cost just $5 for a pack of 24.
One very important caveat: There’s a “last chance to buy” tag on the rod, so it’s best to make your purchase soon before IKEA discontinues the product.
It’s really a twofold hack: Your kids will appreciate their impromptu art gallery, and you’ll get to reclaim some of your storage space (at least until it’s time to rotate out the artwork). TikTokers loved the idea, too, commenting, “this is sooooooo gooooddddd,” and “clever! Stealing this. Would be cute for mementos too.”
I would plan to change it every season, and then toss or mail to family members the pieces that I don’t plan to store as keepsakes. As Kaaylaannee points out in her caption, “there’s no gatekeeping here.”
