This Nursery Is Drenched in Texture and Looks Like the Most Inviting Place to Retreat To
As someone who looks at gorgeous nurseries almost daily, I’m often drawn to the maximalist rooms with lots of patterns, interesting art, and flair. But after viewing what is maybe the most sophisticated-looking nursery I’ve ever seen, I’m now wondering if maybe it’s best to go for a minimalist approach.
Chela, a ceramicist and owner of Takeawei, unsurprisingly has wonderful taste, as shown in the Apartment Therapy House Tour of her eclectic Melbourne home. While Chela’s house looked like something out of an art exhibition, she said at the time of the tour that the rooms were a bit small, so she has to work extra hard to keep them from feeling cluttered. “I’m messy, and messy times 10 with a baby,” she said.
While describing her inspiration in her House Tour, Chela explained, “I’m a maximalist wanting to be a minimalist. I like the simplicity of spaces that are functional with bold color, natural timber, and textures.”
And Chela achieved that aesthetic so beautifully when she decorated a nursery for her daughter, Ocean. The resulting bedroom was architectural and minimalist, with colorful accents and natural woods.
For example, Chela and the sustainable furniture company Like Butter designed a triangular-shaped natural wood shelving system, and Chela repurposed it for storage in Ocean’s bedroom. The baby’s bassinet was made of rattan, and the woven basket on the floor added another touch of the natural world. More texture and the real color in the room came from layered rugs on the floor (which also brought a sensation of coziness to the space).
A large window positioned right next to the bassinet invited natural light from the outdoors inside. And a Monstera deliciosa brought a bright pop of green to the bedroom and complemented the view of the tree just beyond.
Maybe the best part about Ocean’s nursery, though, is how much potential the earth-toned, mature design has to evolve with Ocean over time. After all, kids grow up quickly — and their interests change even faster.
