This $8 IKEA Kids Find Makes This Cozy Craft Corner So Whimsical (It’s Washable, Too!)
Making any space feel like your home can be a challenge. For Marcelline, she had 700 square feet to work with to make a home for herself and her three daughters. And she completely transformed “a beige bachelor pad” into a welcoming apartment with all the comforts of home, including the cutest craft area for her girls.
When Marcelline came across the Manhattan apartment during her divorce, which was initially offered to her as a sublet, it wasn’t the most playful or imaginative space. But it did have some positives: “…It had wonderful light, space, and I could afford it,” she explains in her House Tour. Soon after moving in, she cleverly divided the space with bold colors and shapes so her girls would have a place to be creative.
A Corner of the Living Room Became the Cutest Craft Area
When asked about her favorite part of the apartment, Marcelline says it’s definitely the arts and crafts table in the corner of the living room. “They use it every day and have all their supplies at their fingertips. I spray-painted the wall organizers and painted the trim around it for added fun. The shelf was Buy Nothing and almost all the art supplies were Buy Nothing.”
In her House Tour, Marcelline shares that her three daughters, ages 10, 8, and 3, spend hours at the craft table, and their precious artwork adorns the apartment walls. It makes it even more special that most of the items were thrifted, which is better for the environment — and more affordable.
Creativity can stem from almost anywhere, but it certainly helps if there are vibrant colors around to inspire you. The living room is painted Sherwin-Williams’ “Meander Blue,” a light blue with teal undertones, complemented by soft green trim and wall organizers spray-painted with Rust-Oleum’s “Vintage Teal.”
IKEA’s SKOGSDUVA mushroom stool covers also provide a pop of color. The washable, polyester-filled covers are red with differently-sized white polka dots (to resemble a toadstool) and have an almost five-star rating on the website. And Marcelline isn’t the only fan of this cover. Diana, an IKEA shopper, left a review on the product page saying, in part, “Gives some whimsy to my kitchen. Item is well made, washable, stays on with anti slip dots inside. 10/10.”
It’s no wonder Marcelline’s daughters spend so much time at their craft table; it’s a warm, inviting, and inspirational spot for creativity to thrive. I’m sure art-filled memories are made every day at that table. To see more of her colorful apartment, visit the full House Tour.
