It’s no secret that the bunk bed is one of the most beloved kids beds around. Kids love it for its fun design, as well as the chance to duke it out with big brother to see who gets the top bunk. Parents love it because it makes the most out of small spaces, a must for city dwellers.

But as wonderful as these beds are, there is one slight disadvantage. While the bottom bunk continues to have all the traditional luxuries of a regular bed, the top bunk loses out on some things, namely the bedside table. As someone who has slept on the top bunk before, take it from me: you don’t know how much you need a nightstand until you don’t have one. From a clock to a book to a glass of water, having things within reach is a nice feeling — and now it’s a possibility for both bunk sleepers thanks to the invention of the bunk bed shelf. Attaching either directly to the bed or to a nearby wall for an instant tabletop, these shelves are a must for top bunkers, and we rounded up six of the best ones below.

BedShelfie
$40

The BedShelfie is beloved by bunk bed users and non-bunk bed users alike. This handy shelf attaches to the side of your bed frame and instantly becomes a makeshift side table, keeping everything right within reach.

Genesee Zoomie Kids Shelf
$109$102

For those looking for a wall-mounted option, a shelf like this one from Zoomie Kids is a great way to go. Dual-tiered, it comes with book storage up top and a straight storage compartment on the bottom for things like glasses, a phone, and even a drink.

Minimalist Caddy: Kikkerland Bedside Felt Caddy Pocket

Okay, it's not a shelf, but this this minimalist felt caddy is great for stashing a book or an iPad. And, since it stays in place courtesy of a flap that goes under the mattress, installation is a breeze.
