DIY Molding Makes This Light Blue Boy’s Bedroom Feel Timeless

New mom Maisie Powers didn’t have much time to design a nursery for her son, Arlo. She and her husband moved into their house in June 2025, and the baby was due in December, so Maisie had to work quickly when transforming what had previously been a guest room.

“The design inspiration came from various other nurseries I had seen on Pinterest mixed with my love of traditional home decor,” Maisie shares. “I wanted the nursery to feel like an extension of the other rooms in our home but a perfect, dreamy haven for our son.”

As the first step in achieving that look, Maisie decided on a light blue room (Sherwin-Williams’s Hinting Blue) with wainscoting on every wall. She started the decorating process by collecting images of baby-specific items she liked and creating collages of furniture and accents that worked with blue walls.

In the end, she landed on “light woods, cream accents, and brass details.” (Think: cream-colored blackout curtains, woven baskets, gold curtain rods.) To bring in more of that traditional aesthetic, she and her husband DIY’ed the box trim and moldings after watching extensive TikTok tutorials.

Since the makeover, Maisie says she feels joy each time she visits the room. “My favorite details are the shelves behind the rocking chair. I love displaying his cutest current outfits on the little rail beneath. And his sweet little hot air balloon mobile with a stuffed bear riding inside,” Maisie says. “It hangs in between vintage art I sourced from various museums and had printed on canvas to emulate real paintings.”

Arlo is only a few months old, so right now he only goes into the nursery to get his diaper changed or for a feeding while he sleeps with his parents. He’ll spend more and more time in the gorgeous nursery as he grows. “Although,” adds Maisie, “we joke about having to move his crib into our primary bedroom because we can’t imagine him sleeping in a separate room from us!”
