Four girls in pajamas gather around a glass table, crafting with beads and enjoying snacks like popcorn and cupcakes.

Now that my oldest child has officially entered his teen years, I’ve found a new respect for teenagers. The ones I know are creative and kind people, and I enjoy spending time with my son and his teenage friends way more than I ever thought I would when I was parenting an elementary age child and dreading the impending teenage era. (I think parents are taught to fear the teen years, but I’m here to say, we don’t have to.) I scoured the internet and consulted my teenage son and his friends to find the coolest, cuddliest, cleverest gifts for tweens and teens — these are the cream of the crop.

What to Look for in Gifts for Tweens

Giving a thoughtful gift to a tween or teen is the perfect way to say, “I see you.” It’s just like giving a gift to anyone else in your life — look for things that align with their interests and remind you of them. Teens get an (often unfair) reputation for being surly or hard to please, but by putting a little thought into what might brighten their day or be useful to them, you can show them that you really care, and everyone, regardless of age, appreciates feeling cared for.

Our Top Pick: Oodie Original Wearable Blanket

It can be tough being a teen, and this wearable blanket from Oodie is the picture of cozy comfort, perfect for snugging up with a good book or giggling over their favorite YouTube videos. And the abundance of style choices means there’s an Oodie for every tween or teen.

Teen Gifts Under $20

Xbox Ultimate Game Pass, 3-Month Membership
$60

I’m not too proud to admit that as a 41-year-old mother of two, I have completely lost touch with what video games are cool. If it’s not Super Mario 3 for NES, it’s lost on me. So, for my gamer teen, I like to give him the freedom of choice with an Xbox Game Pass. It’s like Netflix for video games, with dozens of selections for XBox and PC games, so he can pick whatever appeals to him and then, once he’s mastered that game, move on to something new.

Sporting a Cry Baby Badge on their backpack will instantly let your teen’s peers know they’re on top of all the coolest trends.

This fun board game designed for 3 to 10 players is unexpectedly delightful and deceptively simple. Each game takes about 30 minutes from start to finish and is guaranteed to have your teen thinking of colors in a new way. “I love playing this game with my friends,” my son said, “but it’s harder than it sounds.”
