A baby blanket is more than simply a functional means for warmth — it’s one of the first gifts a new life is given, and many times, stays with them well into adulthood. How do you decide on something that has the power to become so meaningful? As a mom and friend to many parents, I know there are an overwhelming amount of options out there, and as someone who shops online for a living, I can tell you that there’s a precious option for every budget and personality. These are my picks for the best baby blankets on the internet right now.

What to Look for in a Baby Blanket

Safety

Without a doubt, safety is the most important consideration when purchasing a baby blanket. It’s important to note that for infants, baby blankets should never be used as a sleeping blanket in the crib unless the child is over 18 months old.  Infants should sleep in a sleep sack or swaddle until they’re at least 18 months old. Instead, use a baby blanket as extra warmth for a stroller ride, as a swaddle, or as a makeshift play mat. Steer clear of extra embellishments such as tassels or buttons that could a) get caught on your baby, or b) your baby could pull off and choke on. Washability also matters. Ideally, the blanket is machine washable so you can frequently clean it, getting rid of any germs or dirty spots.

Size

Many of the best baby blankets clock in at 30×40 inches, but, of course, not all of them do. If you need something for chilly walks around the neighborhood, consider something smaller so it doesn’t accidentally get stuck in the wheels or overwhelm your baby. Meanwhile, if you plan on the blanket being used for sleep through toddlerhood or as a play mat, a larger quilt style is the way to go.

Material

Babies can’t regulate their body temperature on their own, so it’s important that their blanket not be too thin or too thick. Muslin, pima cotton, bamboo, and similar fabrics contain 100% natural fibers and are lightweight and breathable, making them ideal for warmer temperatures. Meanwhile, fleece, flannel, cashmere, and the like are more weighty and can keep your little one perfectly toasty.

A playfully iconic print beloved by all ages, this quilt (that comes in both blue and pink!) is equal parts cozy and cute. It’s made out of 100% cotton, with the monkeys hand-block printed on one side and stripes on the other.
