Kids rooms are always so much fun, perhaps because parents use their children’s spaces to fulfill inner fantasies. But, parents are still parents after all, and can’t entirely forget they also have to keep their kids both busy, and on an even keel. So, when you see great decor ideas that aren’t just creative, but also fun and functional, jump on them. Here are seven favorites that don’t just look good. They also pack in play and entertainment, and sometimes — perhaps most importantly — the holy grail of any room: storage.

Project Nursery shared this Harry Potter-themed room that used acrylic shelving to wall-mount a library of books, organized as a rainbow. The colors look amazing against the painted black wall. It’s a simple solution that’s both storage and bright, fun decor.

This budget-friendly idea from Oh Happy Day is both a kid’s art activity and decor. The huge tangrams are simply cut cardboard, painted different colors/patterns, then arranged in shapes on the wall. After you’ve picked your favorite design, attach to the wall with temporary adhesive strips. It’s fun, it’s geometric, and it’s all around amazing.

When designer Linc Thelen renovated an old church for a family in Little Italy, he filled it with all sorts of fun features, including this massive climbing wall in one of the kids’ rooms. The room looks great and sculptural and dramatic, and it will wear out your kids at the same time.

Here’s a great DIY from Carnet Parisiens that doubles as clothing storage. This plywood painted cactus includes hooks for hanging up jackets and bags. The cactus itself is super graphic and can be scaled up for a bigger visual impact.

Walls don’t get much better than this. One stretch of Lola’s room is both a reading nook and a series of cabinets and closets (made from, what else, IKEA units) for keeping things.

The chalkboard wall in Paige Posladek’s daughter’s room is all sorts of amazing. That emerald green color is gorgeous, and you can imagine many hours of fun once Marlowe is old enough to wield some chalk.
