At Apartment Therapy Media, we know that no two homes or kitchens look the same and we celebrate those differences. By showcasing a diverse range of home dwellers and home cooks, we create an inclusive community for our audience, employees, and contributors.

THE CHANGE INITIATIVE: ATM’S FIRST EMPLOYEE RESOURCE GROUP

This group functions as a safe space for employees who identify as BIPOC (Black Indigenous People of Color) to have an open dialogue and support one another. Their mission is to create and uphold a diverse and inclusive environment at Apartment Therapy Media for employees and our audience alike. This will be achieved by building up the awareness, visibility, and understanding of those in the BIPOC community. This group will enforce the accountability of stakeholders in charge, and others, to maintain a respectful and dignified community among our staff, contributors, and our readers.

INCLUSIVE EMPLOYEE EXPERIENCE

We celebrate the diversity of our employees and are committed to creating an equitable experience for all. In 2020, we anonymously surveyed our employees to gather more information on how attributes like race, gender, sexual orientation, and disability affect their ability to succeed at ATM. This year, we’ve promised to address any barriers that surfaced by overhauling our performance review process, providing clearer metrics for advancement, and training our staff to remove bias from the interview process. We’ll continue to conduct regular surveys to ensure our initiatives are working.

To further education on race, we conduct regular trainings with an external Diversity educator and provide “Safe Space” opportunities for BIPOC employees, and their allies, to discuss current events and racial injustice. We have also launched an anonymous communication portal for employees that goes directly to leaders at the company, giving folks the opportunity to safely share feedback.

We believe that focusing on diversity, equity, and inclusion internally will not only increase employee engagement and improve the BIPOC employee experience, but will make ATM a higher performing organization overall.

OUR HIRING PROCESS

We are committed to maintaining a structured hiring process that is equitable, inclusive, and consistent for each candidate. Our recruiting team works closely with hiring managers to execute sourcing strategies that intentionally recruit individuals from underrepresented groups and diverse experiences to ATM. All of our staff is trained on how to interview and evaluate candidates while reducing bias. We strive to create a candidate-centric process built on transparency, communication, and respect.

EQUITY IN EDITORIAL

We need diverse voices to tell their stories on our sites. That’s why we’ve made it a priority to hire BIPOC contributors and ensure their stories are told in equitable proportions to that of white contributors. If you’d like to contribute to our site, please click here.

Alongside the Change Initiative, we have implemented more sensitivity checks in our content to ensure we are curating stories that accurately highlight different communities and identities.

BLACK-OWNED BUSINESS INITIATIVE

Every month, Apartment Therapy and Kitchn allocate a portion of ad-inventory to promote Black-owned businesses. If you’re a business owner and are interested in this program, we’d love to hear from you. Please send an email to bipocbusinessinitiative@apartmenttherapy.com with more information about your business and include the display assets you’d like us to use on our site.

CHARITABLE DONATIONS

In 2020, we donated to causes that fight for racial justice and equity such as the Equal Justice Initiative, Communities United, and The Loveland Foundation. We’ll continue these efforts in 2021.
